New Layout at the top of the page.

19Oct05

So, some of you may wonder why I changed the top header. Well I guess I was just looking for something fresh, plus I think that the Eames shell chair is a very fitting image for the website, here’s why. The first incarnation of the Eames shell chairs were designer for the 1948 Musum of Modern Art “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design”. The whole purpose of the competition was stated in the catalog: “To serve the needs of the vast maority of people we must have furniture that is adaptable to small apartments and houses, furniture that is well-designed yet moderate in price, that is comfortable but not bulky, and that can be easily moved, stored, and cared for.” The chair was originaly designed to be made from stamped aluminum, and had an estimated cost of production of $7.57. In 1950 in an effort to further reduce the price of production, the chair was produced out of fibreglass instead of aluminum. Sounds like a perfect mascot for GRM to me. So, tell us what you think, do you like it?

  1. [...] It always warms my heart to see someone who loves Charles and Ray Eames as much as I do. Seattle based Orange Peel Enamel makes wonderful enamel pendants, all of them super hip modern designs. My favorite of course is this ode to the Eames’ called “I love Eames”. Each pendant is made individually by hand, and fired at 1500 degrees. The detail and design of the pieces are truly top notch, and the prices very reasonable $25. A web site is in the works, until then check them out at etsy. Orange Peel Enamel at etsy. [...]

[...] While I have heard extensive arguments on whether or not one should by a knock off of an original piece of furniture, I have to admit I am split. Some times its the history of the piece that is personally most important to me, and sometimes it is the design. All debates aside, this Bucket Eifel Base Chair from white on white is looking pretty sweet for $115. Sure it may not be perfectly true to the original design, but it is a lot more true to the original purpose of the chair which was to produce an attractive chair at a price that would be easy for the masses to afford. See my rant on that here. Available form White on White for $115, rocker version for $125 Comments? Post them here in the forums.
