Open Source Storage

Oss3 Bot7Open source is a word I like even more than grassroots. In fact, now that I think about it, maybe I should have named my website opensourcemodern.com (anyone want to buy that domain for me?) and not grassrootsmodern.com. Open source means you are sharing your knowledge for the greater good, free of charge. That the exact idea behind this open source storage drawings on x818.com. It has all the information you need to make your own affordable DIY modern storage. The end result is quite impressive. All you need is a power drill and $200 and a little sense of adventure.
Free plans available from x818.com

Creede is a frugal design junkie. He loves miminamist and mid-century influences and often finds himself with a hammer and drill in hand in order to achieve the style he wants without breaking the bank.

anyone know how to contact the site owner? i browsed through those pages & can’t locate an email addy anywhere …???

Wow. I’ve always wanted to make my own furniture, but figured it couldn’t be done without a massive power tool collection. I think I could actually manage this though, and it looks great!

I encourage anyone to give it a try. Start by just buying the wood. Worst case you will be out like $80.

Tom, his email is pski (at) x818.com it is a little hard to find on his site.

Everyone, let us know how it works.

Um Roger, look at reply #4.

I sent an email to the address supplied in Comment #4 on April 1 2008 requesting a copy of the plans and mentioning Grassroots Modern as the source but I haven’t heard anything back yet. Has anyone actually received a set of plans yet?

That is really cool. This shows how you can really make a cool piece of furniture for next to nothing… it just takes some creativity and tools.

Here are links to PDFs of the plans for both versions of the cabinet:

    http://x818.com/cabinetnumber4/instructions4.pdf

In the Apartment Therapy comments, Pete mentioned he used finishing nails and glue to join the wood. Others have used 1 1/2″ screws. I’d be curious to hear about any experiences anyone has with different joinery techniques for this project.
