Alexei Vella

200811250759
I ran across Alexei Vella’s retro-styled illustrations the other day and was really impressed. His work takes inspiration not only from vintage comics and cartoons, but anything from pop art to pulp posters. Vella’s work, often filled with social or political commentary, displays a certain wit and intelligence that I find irresistible.

From his website:

Alexei Vella specializes in creating images that are both striking and complex, sensual yet undeniably intellectually involving. In order to achieve this unique look, Vella employs a complex colour palette, an eclectic application of graphics and texture, and a sophisticated use of antiquated surfaces. Appropriating the colloquial iconography of popular retro forms to an emboldened modern sensibility, Vella’s work has achieved international recognition appearing in a variety of exhibitions and print.

I never cease to be amazed at how much people will spend on themselves. While I admit that Alexei Vella’s retro-styled illustrations are pretty nifty, the $125 price tag seems a little insane for a piece of paper.

If the value you place on a work of art is based solely on the materials that went into it, then I suppose $125 would seem a little pricey for ‘a piece of paper’.

    To each his own, right?

Thanks Grassroots Modern for this post…
I am curious about where the price $125 was pulled from?
I have no mention of selling my work on my site or on my flickr.

In regards to price, if you don’t know, if a piece is shown in a gallery, the price is usually based on a 50/50 cut, so if the artist is selling his/her work in a gallery for a price of $125, they are only getting $62 and change.

    Alexei.
