Hotel Arts

200901220624.jpg

Over the holidays last month we found ourselves crossing the border into Canada for a day and heading up to the bitter cold city of Calgary. While best known for the Calgary Stampede our trip took us there to check out a recently renovated designer boutique hotel. Hotel Arts started out as a Holiday Inn, but has been transformed into one of the hippest hotels north of the border. Filled with original contemporary art and each room outfitted with chocolate expresso modern decor the hotel has a nice ambiance. Their focus on good food is just as strong as their focus on good design, and the hotel houses one of the top ten restaurants in Canada, the Saint Germain. We really did eat some amazing food while we were there. Due to the -10 degree temperatures we missed out on the outdoor pool, but we did put our in room jacuzzi through it’s paces. While all this sounds very extravagant and expensive I was amazed at comparatively how affordable it was. Room prices start at around $260 canadian ($200 USD) which compared to the $120 stay in a La Quinta in Great Falls Montana made Hotel Arts seem like the bargain of the century.

Check out some pictures I snapped after the jump.

Also do you know of any other “Modern” hotels? I’d love to hear about them….

Creede is a frugal design junkie. He loves miminamist and mid-century influences and often finds himself with a hammer and drill in hand in order to achieve the style he wants without breaking the bank.

    Hey Creede,

I check out the grassroots modern page every couple of days and this morning I was surprised to see this here. I can see The Hotel Arts building from my office window and am maybe 2 blocks away. Hotel Arts is a cool hotel, I worked on the launch of the hotel a few years ago, they are really trying to make a medium sized hotel “boutiquee” and I think they are successful.

In Boise we have “The Modern” in the Linen District. It was originally an old Travel Lodge.

There’s a cool hotel in Portland called Jupiter Hotel. I’ve always wanted to go to it. It looks pretty neat.

I had the chance to pick my hotel a couple years ago on a business trip to Seattle. You’d better bet I picked modern. I stayed at the Hotel Andra downtown. It was absolutely marvelous. Modern with Scand touches and some great traditional details (penny tiles in the bath) I’ve never had a better hotel stay. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

One hotel that I’ve never had the chance to stay at, but I always return to their site to gawk at, is the StarLux in Wildwood, NJ. Check out their MCM retro vibe–and get a load of that lobby. You can even stay in their Airstream.

And of course, you know about The Parker, the Jonathan Adler designed oasis in Palm Springs. Suitable only if you love Adler (which I do.)

Mark, that’s funny that you work so close. Downtown Calgary actually looked pretty cool.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I’ll check them out.

The Alt Hotel in Quebec City is really great. I think we were more excited about the hotel than the weekend getaway. Can’t wait to go back.
