Snapalarm Smoke Detector

200910140805.jpg

I love it when people think outside of the box. For instance, why does a smoke detector have to attach right to the ceiling? What if it was a attractive orb that could be snapped onto a pendant light? Snapalarm does just that. Winner of a Red Dot design award, this is the first smoke detector I have seen that completely breaks free of the typical design. Available in black or white to fit in with your decor. So is a wart on a lamp cord better looking than a wart on your ceiling?

Available from Scandinavian Design Center for $29

Creede is a frugal design junkie. He loves miminamist and mid-century influences and often finds himself with a hammer and drill in hand in order to achieve the style he wants without breaking the bank.

I think this design is great, but what if you had an electrical fire? Wouldn’t the unit be comprised when it’s casing melted?

While I appreciate the innovation, I’d rather have a wart on my ceiling than on my lamp cord. I think it draws too much attention to itself and ruins the design of the lamp. That’s just me, though. I’ll definitely give them props for thinking outside the ceiling box.

I’m w/ Capree — I think it detracts from the design and look of a lamp. I don’t understand the science behind smoke alarms or anything, but can’t someone design a hard-wired, flushmount (or low-profile) alarm that could be incorporated into your drywall (or other wall material)? Maybe something like this already exists? If someone has time to hit up Google on this, let us know!!

I’ve been waiting for years for it to become available, alas I don’t know that it ever will be.

Creede: EXACTLY like that!! It’s a thing of beauty! Last updates on the site appear to be 2006, so I won’t hold my breath either.
